Class Descriptions

Morning Sail Camp (Ages 7-10)
Times:  Monday – Thursday 9 am - noon. Check calendar on website for weeks offered
Program Cost:  $150 Members/$190 Non-Members
Sailboat used: Opti

We hold this class in the morning to take advantage of the generally lower wind speeds for our younger sailors. In this class, youth sailors learn the basic skills to sail a small boat independently.  Sailors are taught the parts of the sailboat, the points of sail, capsize recovery, and basic knot tying.  Students are divided on skill level and instruction is tailored to that level to ensure students stay engaged and continue to enjoy their skill development.  Our young sailors can take this class multiple times and will be divided based on skill levels while working with the instructors to improve their sailing abilities.

All students will always wear life jackets.  Instructors, either in the student's boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students.  All instructors are experienced sailors and have learned to sail in the DLYC Sailing School.
Afternoon Sail Camp (Ages 11-16)
Times: Monday-Thursday 1 pm-4 pm. Check calendar on website for weeks offered
Program Cost: $150 Members/$190 Non-Members
Sailboats used: Sunfish and 420

In this class, youth sailors learn the skills to sail a sunfish single handed or a 420, a two-person boat, with another sailor or improve their skills on an Opti.  While reinforcing all the student's previous sailing skills, these sailors will focus on on-water instruction, steering the boat, proper sail trim, define their upwind and downwind sailing techniques and basic right-of-way rules.  Most students upon completion of multiple sessions of this course will be introduced to racing.  Our young sailors can take this class multiple times and will be divided based on skill levels while working with the instructors to improve their sailing abilities.

All students will always wear life jackets.  Instructors, either in the student's boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students.  All instructors are experienced sailors.  All have learned to sail in the DLYC Sailing School.
Open Sail Class (Ages 7-16)
Times: Monday-Thursday 1 pm-4 pm. Check calendar on web site for weeks offered
Program Cost: $150 Members/$190 Non-Members
Sailboats used: Opti, Sunfish and 420

In recognition of the number of families that vacation at Diamond Lake around the fourth of July this new class is being offered to encourage youth sailing on the lake. All classes are  focused on fun and social interchange as opposed to strictly racing. In this class, youth sailors learn the skills to sail an Opti, sunfish single handed or a 420, a two-person boat, with another sailor.  They will interact with the instructors both on the water and classroom. On shore they will be taught how to correctly rig their sailboat , launch and then sail the craft.

KinderSail (Ages 5-6)
Times:  Monday – Thursday 10am to noon. Check calendar on website for weeks offered
Program Cost:  $135 per student

Sailboat Used:  Opti

KinderSail is a popular four-day session designed to give the youngest sailors (ages 5-6) an easy, safe introduction to sailing. This two-hour per day course provides great exposure to our (and hopefully their) new favorite activity while starting to teach them fundamental sailing and safety skills and building confidence on the water that carries over into other areas of their lives.

This course is offered to DLYC Members only.
Parent/Child Sailing (Ages 7-16)
Times:  Saturday Morning 10 am to 12 noon. Check calendar on website for weeks offered.
Cost:  $100
Sailboat used:  420

Class will be open to an adult and youth sailor who has attended at least one of the Sailing School classes past KinderSail.
The purpose of this class is primarily to have fun on the water and to have the adult member see firsthand their young sailor handle the experience of sailing.

Depending on skill level, an instructor may be an active participant in the sailboat.

Basic sailing will be taught including tiller work, tacking, and reading wind direction.

This course is offered to DLYC Members only.
